KFC Invites America to Give Colonel Sanders a U.S. Stamp of Approval

Date Posted: 10/18/2006

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Oct 18, 2006 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Hollywood legends, American superheroes and Hall of Fame inductees grace U.S. postage stamps and now, Kentucky Fried Chicken has petitioned the United States Postal Service to add its legendary founder, Colonel Harland Sanders, to that elite group. To help make its case, KFC is asking for America's stamp of approval.

Starting today, chicken lovers nationwide can visit http://www.KFC.com to sign an online petition asking the U.S.P.S. to honor Colonel Sanders, an American entrepreneurial icon, with his own stamp.

"The Colonel's entrepreneurial spirit and hospitable nature made him an American legend," said James O'Reilly, interim Chief Marketing Officer for KFC. "We believe that a postage stamp in his honor would be a fitting tribute to his memory."

Colonel Sanders recently was named one of America's two favorite advertising icons for 2006 and inducted into Madison Avenue's Advertising Walk of Fame. He is the first real person ever to receive this designation.

More About the Colonel

In 1952, at the age of 65, Colonel Sanders used his $105 Social Security check to start the first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant. He traveled across the country by car, from restaurant to restaurant, cooking batches of chicken for restaurant owners and their employees. By 1964, Colonel Sanders had more than 600 franchised outlets for his chicken in the United States and Canada. For years the Colonel acted as a public spokesman for the company, and in 1976, he was ranked as the world's second most recognizable celebrity. Today, there are more than 13,000 KFC restaurants in more than 80 countries and territories around the world, serving some eight million customers each day.
